We Have Invented New Roots for Ourselves
The precariousness of migrant status has always challenged me. Not wishing to appropriate a situation that is not mine, I rather thought of arousing sympathy towards those who are forced to leave, thinking of the destabilizing situations that we, citizens of a democratic country and living in a relatively stable society, can face during our lives. Moving to another city for studies or work, falling/rising social class, moving into a seniors' residence, illness, loss of autonomy, these events we have experienced by ourselves or by proxy through a loved one. These are the works of the series We Have Invented New Roots for Ourselves that evoke the vertigo of these circumstances. The central form that occupies each of the compositions is a human shadow, suggesting both presence and absence. To this one, I grafted a root drawing coming from the Flore Laurentienne by brother Marie-Victorin, the main botanical reference of Quebec.
This project marks a return to the work with the handmade paper technique that accompanied me in my artistic beginnings. The contours of a human shadow are defined using the colored pulp on the wet handmade sheet of paper. Once dry, this composition and other sheets of handmade paper are dyed using natural dyes and inks. The sheets of paper are then assembled by collage, followed by pictorial interventions carried out with sewing machine and by pyrography.
