Automne, Paysages-Vêtements (Autumn, Garment Landscapes)
You are greeted by the sight of a landscape fragment; an aerial view of cultivated fields, framed by agglomerations, is materialised by a patchwork quilt of imposing dimensions (10m wide and 12m long).
The material for this installation is made up of hundreds of pairs jeans. As a clothing element, jeans were chosen for their universality: present in all wardrobes, they do not discriminate according to age or social ranking. Collecting jeans takes place in a spirit of cooperation and community; the artist’s close relations contributed by supplying the material for this patchwork.
This project is part of a reflection upon landscape, the human presence within it, and the seasonal cycle as well as upon the artist’s work in the workshop and at the moment of presentation. One cannot remain unmoved by this sheer mass of fabric which bears so many memories and appeals to the observer’s entire being. Each section has its own story and one could virtually capture tangible life impressions of the bodies that once inhabited these fabrics, before they were incorporated into a quilt.
